Why Fad Diets Make Me Mad

Should you follow a juice cleanse diet to lose weight? What about the “blood type” diet? Every time you turn on the TV, there’s another diet that promises you can lose tons of weight while eating all the junk food you want. What’s the truth about fad diets?

1. Fad Diets Don’t Work

The first reason I hate these diets is because they’re not effective at losing weight. “But I’ve seen the testimonials, Dr. Sterling!” some people say. Yes, there are testimonials, but they're usually by paid actors.

What they don’t tell you, however, is that you’re going to gain all the weight back in no time. Big weight-loss numbers only show up for the first week or two, if at all. After that, your body panics and it gets much harder to lose weight. Fad diets are always doomed to failure because they ignore how your body works.

2. Fad Diets Are Scams

It makes me mad when I see “miracle” diet products that promise to make you lose 50 pounds for just $99.99. Millions of people get scammed by companies that take advantage of how much you want to lose weight. They never deliver on the big promises, and when you try to contact the business, they don’t answer your calls.

Compare that to the 100% satisfaction guarantee and helpful team at Science Natural Supplements, and it’s easy to see the difference. I tell my patients that nutrients and natural foods are important for burning fat, but I also make it clear that they need to work for it. Long-term weight loss is 50% what you give your body and 50% how you live your life.

3. Fad Diets Hurt Your Body

Many fad diets take things to the extreme. They tell you to completely eliminate certain foods and eat way too much of others. This is dangerous.

One example are pure juice diets. They do flush away water weight, but they also strip your body of healthy nutrients and probiotics. It’s OK to reduce the amount of carbs, fat or sugar you eat, but it’s never a good idea to completely cut foods from your life. There are some vitamins, minerals and nutrients that you can only get from grains, veggies, proteins or dairy. That’s why vegans need to take supplements that contain vitamin B-12 and omega-3 fatty acids.

Better Alternatives

Don’t let fad diets discourage you from reaching your weight loss goals. There are plenty of healthy options for burning fat.

One solution is to choose a weight-loss method with real science behind it. For example, there are the Mediterranean and keto diets. Keto cuts carbs and increases healthy fats for burning, which can help balance blood sugar and reduce cholesterol. Of course, keto takes some discipline, and it’s not ideal for everyone.

Another option is to not go on a “diet” at all. “But how can I lose weight if I’m not dieting?” most people would ask. The answer is that you can focus on eating normal portions of healthy foods that have good nutrients. When you balance fruit, veggies, nuts, proteins, grains and dairy, you feel great without having to punish yourself.

I usually recommend my patients take a curcumin supplement to increase your body’s metabolism naturally. Turmeric, cayenne pepper, ginger and other spices can reduce cravings and increase the amount of fat you burn.
