Are Multi Vitamins Worth The Trouble?

Studies show approximately 35% of us take some type of multivitamin supplement. The older we get the more likely we are to take multivitamins.  The peak consumption of multivitamins seems to be in adults between the ages of 65 – 75 years old. Do multivitamins work and should we consider adding them to our daily routine?

Multivitamins are a type of supplement that contain a combination of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients used to support better health. To be considered a multivitamin the supplement must contain at least three vitamins and minerals without the addition of herbs, hormones or drugs.

Many of us take multivitamins to fill in nutritional gaps and hope to prevent deficiencies in key vitamins and minerals. With the general lack of necessary nutrition in our diets these days, taking a good multivitamin seems like very solid advice for everyone as we go through our lives.

Key points to keep in mind when choosing a multivitamin would be:

1. Choose a multivitamin that is formulated for our appropriate age. Children and younger adults will want specific nutrients to support growing strong, healthy bodies while older adults will be better served with nutrients to maintain bones and organs.

2. Take the appropriate multivitamin for our sex. Women and men have substantially different nutrition needs, especially as we age. For men, vitamins A, B12, C, E and D3 are important with magnesium being a beneficial mineral. For women, the same vitamins are important as for men, however, minerals including calcium, folate and iron are vital for good feminine health. 

3. How complete is the nutrition we receive from our daily diet? To put it bluntly, do we make a habit of eating healthy, fresh nutrient-dense foods or do we live on fast food, take-out and delivery meals? The better we eat on a daily basis the easier it will be to supplement with multivitamins. If our daily consumption is downright terrible then very high-quality multivitamins are a must if we hope to enjoy any type of health in our golden years.

Some of the benefits of multivitamins can be correcting nutritional deficiencies, promoting healthy pregnancy, help maintain bone strength, improved brain function and eye health along with proper growth and development in children. Of course, multivitamins can always be expected to help with healthy organs such as heart, lungs and our digestive systems.


Caution should be exercised when choosing a multivitamin, as not all are created equally. Many vitamins and minerals are contaminated with harmful fillers, additives and questionable ingredients. Some of these harmful substances can include food dyes, hydrogenated fats and genetically modified cornstarch. Not only can these ingredients potentially negate many of the health benefits of our daily multivitamin, but they may also cause long-term consequences to our health.

Multivitamins are definitely worth the trouble and can be lifesavers for combatting many nutritional deficiencies. For best results, be sure to find a multivitamin free of fillers and additives and produced from real, whole-food sources. And always, make sure to combine our multivitamin supplements with a healthy, well-rounded diet to promote better long-term health.
